February 24, 2018

Everyone loves a good hack. You can find life hacks all over the internet that makes life so much easier. What if there are hacks out there that can help you save money, space, and time when you travel? What if I told you I comprised a list of 35 brilliant travel hacks from the most obvious to the bizarre hacks.

**I may earn some cash from the companies mentioned in this post. That being said,  I only recommend products that I’ve used and loved! I Thank you for your support. Read full disclosure here.

1. Roll your clothes instead of folding them.

This saves space in your suitcase and can also save you money on luggage fees.

2. Turn on the private browser.

Many online sites keep track of how many times you check for a flight and can raise the fees.

3. Do NOT buy bottled water.

Although you are not to bring bottled water through security. You can bring an empty water container or bottle and refill it once you pass through security.

4. Email your passport

In case of emergencies email a copy of your passport and any other documents that way you have them.

5. Keep your clothes fresh.

Use a dryer sheet in your backpack or luggage and it will keep your clothes smelling fresh.

6. Use the hotel TV for charging

Most hotels have updated TVs and you can use the USB to charge your phone.

7. Buy a dummy wallet

Using a dummy wallet will help if you get pickpocket.

8. Find flight errors

Save on your next flight. Flight errors can save 90% on their airfare. Spotting odd low prices during your search can be a flight error and you can take advantage of that. Use websites like Skyscanner and Secret Flying.

9. Fragile bags

Mark your luggage or bags as fragile, even when you don’t have anything that can break. This can save you time when you are at baggage claim. Airlines tend to put baggage that has tags that say fragile on top. This allows you to get your baggage first.

10. Use ATM

Use the local ATM to get the local currency.

11. Taking a cab

Do not follow the crowd to hail a cab, instead head to the departure terminal. Taxi cabs have just dropped off passengers and are empty with no waiting lines.

12. Find the locals

The best restaurants and little gems are where the locals go. Here can you find where the locals go? Use the app Party With a Local.

13. Don’t sleep on dirty sheets

You read the stories that people bring home bed bugs from their vacation or slept in a dirty bed. To eliminate this check for fresh creases. This means the bed was changed recently. If you don’t see any, call housekeeping.

14. Stops on road trips

Road trips are such a great way to see the world however, there is a little more planning that has to take place especially when you are traveling with children. Use SitandSquat for all your bathroom breaks. This app lets you know the nearest bathroom. Another great app is iExit app. This app finds nearest pit stops and gas stations.

15. Cheap Gas

Gas prices can vary from place to place. To get the best rates in gas while on the road. Use GasBuddy.

16. Sign up for TSA pre-check in

You no longer have to wait in line to go through security. No more taking off your shoes. Doing a little paperwork and brief interview you can be in the express line to check in. You no longer have to fill out paperwork when flying internationally.

17. Get a good seat

Too far from the bathroom or stuck in the middle seat on your flight? You can now change that by planning where you want to sit on your flight. Use the website SeatGuru. This website allows you to look at available seats before you book.

18. Keep toothbrush clean

Use a clothespins to hold your toothbrush upright so the toothbrush will not touch hotel countertop.

19. Protect your clothes

No one wants shoes and clothes to touch. Use a dollar tree shower cap to hold your shoes. This will separate the shoes and clothes. Don’t have a shower cap. Recycle plastic bags that you have laying around and put shoes in to protect your clothes.

20. Lose jewelry

Use a dollar tree weekly pill container to hold all your lose jewelry from earrings to rings.

21. Fresh batteries

Store your batteries in the freezer to keep them fresh.

22. Packing squares

Use packing square to organize your luggage. This will help you find items easier.

24. Store your cords

Use a glasses holder to hold all your electronic cords.

25. Save storage for razor

Use a metal clip to protect and store your razors

26. Prevent Spills

Use plastic wrap to prevent spills. Open top cap to any of your favorite soap or shampoo bottles and add plastic wrap over the opening and put the cap back on. No more spills.

27. Call your bank

Call your bank or credit card company before you travel. Inform them that you will be on vacation and locally or internationally. That way you will not be locked out your card due to a fraud protection.

28. Buy portable charger

Buy a portable charger so you never run out of battery juice.

29. Cereal containers

Use a cereal container as a trash bin on road trips.

30. Shower Caddie

Use shower caddies for mess-free eating. This is great for kids.

31. Protect phone

Store your phone in a plastic zip-lock bag. This prevents water from getting to your phone.

32. Drink on flight

Want to drink on your flight. Buy mini drink bottles. These minis are allowed on flights.

33. Heavy load

Pack all heavy items closest to the wheels of your suitcase. This makes life easy when you have to pick up your suitcase when it is laying down.

34. Dirty laundry

Bring a collapsible or mesh laundry bag to store all your dirty laundry. This keeps clothes off the floor and separates clean and dirty clothes.

35. Pack underwear in carry-on

Pack underwear in your carry-on just in case your luggage gets lost.

Great tips…may have to remember Sit&Squat for Darcee cause she always has to pee like 100x when we leave for a road trip. Never heard of Party With a Local..now that is a great find! I love all the other tips too to make your life easier but also to save $$. I always bring a water bottle when I fly because I HATE spending $8+ on something that is free at the water fountain across the walkway. Plus I get dehydrated on a plane and that little itty bitty cup they pour doesnt always do it for me but with my water bottle I am always good! These are 35 Brilliant Travel Hacks for sure!

Yes, we did this when it was just my husband and me in Brazil. I was nervous at first but with the two of us together and turned out pretty fun. We ate where the locals eat and it was dirt cheap. We went the local clubs and shops that most tourist areas hide from tourist.

What a great post, thanks for sharing! One can think, “I’ll remember everything”, before travelling, but in actual fact it is so easy to forget. A great list, especially number 34!

Yes, they are and I do forget some as I travel. It really depends on what I am doing. But 34 is a good one.
