If you’re about to embark on your first solo trip, chances are you’re excited, apprehensive, and wondering what on earth it’ll be like to finally set off unaccompanied.

Obviously, nothing compares to experiencing it for yourself, but it never hurts to have an idea of what you might encounter along the way, so here are five things you should expect when travelling solo.
1. You have complete freedom
Being the sole decision-maker gives you a lot more flexibility than you’d have if you were travelling with a partner, relative or friend. So enjoy it!
Do what you want to do, when you want to do it and tick off all the must-see sights on your itinerary. You can also make snap decisions without worrying about someone else’s preferences; now’s the time to be spontaneous.
2. Your confidence will grow
With no one else to rely on, hiccups like lost luggage and missed transport connections (25% of travellers admit to missing a flight, according to TINZ) are your responsibility first and foremost. Travelling solo means facing challenges — and you’ll surprise yourself with how capable you are of dealing with them.
There are also plenty of opportunities to try new things, whether it’s a strange delicacy or an adrenaline-packed activity like canyon swinging. Conquering so many hurdles in one trip will leave you feeling fearless.
3. You’ll meet people from all walks of life
There’s something wonderful about having a conversation with someone you would never have met otherwise, so make the most of it and find out about their experiences. Life is a little different everywhere you go and learning about it will really open up your eyes.
It’s much easier to get chatting to others when you’re travelling solo — you’ll be more approachable if you’re by yourself and people will be more inclined to help you out.
4. You might feel lonely at times
There’ll be days when you really notice the lack of regular company, especially if you’ve been on the road for a long time. This is completely normal.
The best way to deal with loneliness is to accept how you feel, then spend a couple of days relaxing and looking after yourself in whatever way works best. Some people need to get out and stay busy, while others prefer to have some downtime before they get back to exploring.
5. … but it will be one of the best experiences you ever have
Not only will you see more of the world and learn about different cultures and ways of thinking, but you’ll become more adaptable, courageous, and open-minded. Travelling solo is an unforgettable experience, so what are you waiting for?

This is really helpful! I have been going over the idea of finally applying for passport. One day, I’m not sure when…. I would like to travel with and without others. So thank you for this post.
